Summer is the most anticipated season! Even though this season is all about having fun, you have to remember to implement some summer self-care into your wellness routine.
As a 2000s child, when I hear the word, “summer,” I think of High School Musical’s iconic line, “What time is it? Summertime.”
Summer is the perfect time to indulge in self-care and focus on your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Self care during the summer will be totally different compared to winter self care, where you’re likely inside more and it’s cold out.
The warmer months allow us to go outside and have longer breaks and vacations. Summer also gives us a different variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to eat and more sunlight to soak up for Vitamin D.
This blog post will give summer self care ideas that you can do when planning your summer self care routine.
The 15 Summer Self-Care Ideas You Can Do This Summer
1. Get out of the house
Summertime is the time of the year when people go out and have fun. You can go outside to do activities like a concert, a fair, or just a simple walk in the park. Spend time outside as part of your summer self care this year!
2. Bring your sunscreen everywhere
Remember self care is also about taking care of yourself. Bring sunscreen with your everywhere as part of summer self care. Also, apply it before you get outside. (I tend to carry it and wait until I’m outside to do so.)
Protect your skin from sunburn or any skin damage by wearing sunscreen daily and if you have to wear a hat or bring an umbrella.
Another basic self care idea that can be used at any time of the year is staying hydrated. However, summertime is the prime time to keep a water bottle like this around to keep your daily water intake easier to track. Replenish fluids often to keep your body cool.
4. Take a summer vacation or even a staycation.
Take off from work to enjoy a nice vacation. Don’t hesitate. Take off and go plan a trip or even plan to stay in your hometown or state as a stay-cation.
Getting out to exercise is one thing you can do during the summer as self care. Exercising is one of the classic self care ideas that you can implement into your self care routine at any time of the year.
But working out in the summertime is different because it’s not freezing cold like the winter and the days are longer. People are more likely to have exercise classes in the summer as well, which makes it easier to get motivated.
6. Read the Summer’s Best Seller list
Summer reading challenges are popular. Reading is another easy self care idea that you can do this summer. Tons of books are made just for summer reading and are quick reads.
7. Take advantage of Summer Fridays or Summer Break
Whether you are an employee at a company that offers Summer Fridays or a student ready for Summer Break, you should take full advantage of your break time. Use this time to implement nice habits or simply relax from stressful days at your job or during school. Don’t feel bad that you took a few hours off before the weekend for your Summer Friday.
Also, you shouldn’t feel obligated to work your butt off 24/7 during the summer as a student.
Basically, don’t feel bad about using your break time for relaxing or having fun.
8. Swim your stress away (or just dip your toes)
Swimming is a summer activity that you might want to consider as part of your summer self care idea. It’s the perfect time to take summer swimming classes to learn or go to a public pool. Swimming has tons of benefits such as counting a full body workout, improving well-being and mental health, and much more.
9. Have a picnic
Take a break during the summer and have a picnic! It doesn’t have to be elaborate or fancy. Just grab a blanket and a few bags with snacks and food, go to a local park, and have fun. You can go solo or bring your family or friends. Spend some time enjoying the outdoors and a snack.
10. Eat in-season fruits and vegetables
Okay, another classic self care idea is to obviously eat healthier foods like fruits and vegetables but to make it summer-themed you can try getting fruits and vegetables that are in season during the summer. Try a fruit salad or cook some in-season vegetables as a side.
Some in-season foods include:
- Berries & Cherries
- Yellow Squash
- Lemons & Limes
- Butter lettuce
11. Stop scrolling
One of the hardest summer self-care ideas is honestly going on a social media detox. Summer is the time of the year I remember when I was in school when my screen time skyrocketed. Taking a social media detox can be a summer self-care idea that you can do, especially if you are a student. It’s summer!
Go outside or learn a new hobby. Tiktok, Instagram, and all the other social media apps aren’t going anywhere. Instead of dedicating time to apps, dedicate some time to yourself and your life.
12. Get ahead of studying…a little
Summertime is also time to maybe head back to school or take a course! If you’re typically busy during the rest of the year and have been wanting to take a course to improve your career, try doing it in the summer. Most colleges and universities have summer classes.
If you are a student, maybe take a summer class so you can graduate early or have fewer classes to worry about when during the spring or fall.
But you can also simply study. Learn a new language. Take a dance class.
13. Summer cleaning time
You might hear about spring cleaning a lot, but don’t neglect cleaning in the summer. Summer is a great time to clean. Spend some time getting rid of old summer clothes you don’t like. Get rid of things that are just clutter in your home. Or simply clean your entire house or apartment.
14. Catch up with friends or family
Summer is a great time to catch up with friends and family. Most people take off from work or are off from school. Take time during the summer to meet up with family members that you haven’t spoken to in a long time.
Also, take some time to chat with old friends. Maybe even plan a family reunion or vacation. Maybe spend a weekend with your friends, too.
15. Sleep in
Finally, another summer self care idea that you can add to your self care routine is to sleep in some days this summer. If you are off, try to sleep in. Sleep is more important than people think it is. Sleeping doesn’t only give you energy, but your body also heals itself during sleeping. Your body needs sleep. Sure, it’s fine to stay up during the summer and have fun, but make sure you get good rest and sleep.
How can I take care of myself in the summer?
To take care of yourself in the summer, you should definitely pay attention to the temperature outside and pace yourself. It’s obviously hot during the summer, but your body has limits. Like mentioned before stay hydrated and get rest.
