The Dorm Bathroom Essentials You’ll Need For College
1. Shower Caddy
Regardless of the type of bathroom you have, a shower caddy will be necessary to carry your items back and forth from the shower. This works best for those living in communal or en suite bathrooms.
I also would advise against having a hard shower caddy. I had one in my freshman year, and it carried all the water from the showers across the halls and into your room.
- Unique Hook Design – A large portable shower caddy equipped with an attached to safely store your keys, personalized blue college shower caddy for dorm.
- Larger Size – Larger to hold yet doesn’t lose shape. 9.4 x 9.0 x 8.7 inch, 8 pockets easily hold full bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, all your toiletry, cosmetic and other bath accessories, make them easy to find, carry and use.
2. Toilet Paper
Your dorm building may or may not provide toilet paper. And if they do, it may be the cheap kind that sticks and falls apart when you touch it. Bring a pack of toilet paper in case.
3. Towels
You will definitely need towels. This is the most needed dorm room bathroom essential. Dorms do not provide them. You’ll need a couple of large, medium, and small towels, so get a towel set like this.
I also recommend spending more on these towels because of the shredding issues some have (I’m learning that with my first apartment).
4. Robe
This is essential for communal bathrooms and suites for sure. You’ll need a robe to get to and from your bathroom and dorm room. It is nice to have if you have a private bathroom if you have a roommate. Robes are also great outerwear for when you are just at home. This robe from UGG has a hoodie!

5. Loofah
Loofahs are needed as well. You’ll likely use these more than towels because of the showers. Remember to change them out every month!
6. Shower Shoes
The dorm room bathroom I didn’t know about until I got to college was shower shoes. I stayed on campus for a camp before starting my freshman year to learn more about the campus. Shower shoes will prevent your feet from getting itchy and from touching the gross bathroom floor. There are so many germs in college dorms, and bathrooms are likely the top spot.
- 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭: Built with High-Elastic EVA midsole for shock absorption and comfort cushioning
- 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐃𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠: Drain holes design accelerate the water to drain out and dry quickly
7. Antibacterial Soap
Make sure to have some soap to wash your hands.
8. Shower Rug
If you have a suite or private bathroom, you’ll need a shower rug. Do not be like me and be cheap and not get one. I used a medium-sized towel and almost slipped. Also, purchase one that has slip prevention, because I bought a cheap one that I also almost slipped on. Get a quality shower rug.
This is similar to the shower rug I had in college:

9. Shower Gel
A bottle of shower gel is needed. You’ll need it for sure! I use Dove’s Acne-Prone Skin Body Wash since I have sensitive skin that breaks out if I don’t use it. But bring whatever wash you want!
10. Soap
Having a bar of soap can be a backup or an alternative to antibacterial soap. If you also prefer soap over a shower gel, then bring soap.
11. Makeup Organizer
Storing makeup in a dorm isn’t that tricky. But I knew plenty of girls who had makeup organizers on their vanity or sink, especially if they had tons of makeup. I have this organizer, and it is small enough for my bathroom.
For college, I personally recommend bringing your basic makeup needs and having it in a bag.
- LARGE STORAGE CAPACITY: This makeup spinning organizer offers generous storage space, allowing you to neatly organize a wide range of cosmetics and beauty products
Essentials For En Suite Dorm Room Bathrooms
Suite dorm bathrooms are more common for newer dorm buildings (at least on my campus). If you opt for this bathroom, then you’ll share it with another room of girls.
12. Shower Curtain
You may want to find out if your dorm provides a shower curtain. I think mine did. If it doesn’t provide a shower curtain, then you’ll (or your suite mates) will need to buy a liner and a curtain.
The liner goes inside and is usually plastic, while the curtain goes outside. You will also need shower hooks to hang it on the rod. Also, remember to see how long and how wide your shower is.

13. Waterproof Speaker
Your phone’s speaker will not be loud enough over that shower’s water. Trust me, I was there, trying to hear my music or podcast at full volume, and was barely hearing anything until I got this speaker. Either get a speaker that is waterproof or a small one that you can place on the toilet or somewhere.

15. Toilet Cleaner
I’ve visited some people’s bathrooms, and the toilet…was not it. Please, get a thing of toilet cleaner for you and your guests. Once a week, just put this cleaner on your toilet, let it sit for a few minutes, scrub it with a toilet brush, and flush.

16. Toilet Plunger & Brush
I never had to use a plunger in my college dorm room bathroom. But you never know. Have it just in case. I also highly recommend having a toilet brush to clean the toilet. I used a toilet brush every week when cleaning my dorm.

17. Towel Rack/Over Toilet Storage Rack
Over toilet storage racks are so useful. This is a dorm bathroom essential that you can wait to get until you and your suite mates and roommate want this and could split the price. It can be pricey, but my college’s dorms did not provide a towel rack or anywhere to place towels.
It was gross to put it on the floor, and the toilet wasn’t the best place to put clean towels. Getting a towel storage rack that can go over your toilet would be a great thing to have.
If you have the space, get one to hold your towels. It’ll allow you to have space in your sink cabinets for your hygiene, cleaning, and beauty products.
- 【Over Toilet Storage】The bottom shelf can easily fits into space behind your toilet. Featuring three mesh shelves, it provides ample storage for bathroom accessories, shampoo, shower gels, towels, and hair dryers. Keep daily necessities organized and easily accessible.
That’s all the dorm bathroom essentials you’ll likely need.
