So it’s been a while since I was in a college dorm. I remember Moving In Day like no other. I remember being so overwhelmed with college, let alone moving into a brand new dorm. So let me give you all a realistic list of the things you truly need for college.
I used to write for a college blog, so I’m not going to get into the logistics and extra details in this post. These are simply the main things you definitely need for a dorm room. I think that these are truly must haves for any dorm.
However, I just finished writing a complete, realistic college dorm room packing list that covers EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR YOUR DORM. It’s a long post that I recommend reading if you want to know every single thing you need.
17 Must Haves for Dorm Rooms in 2026, aka What You Really Need For a Dorm
1. Mattress Cushion
One of the first things you should have for your dorm is a mattress cushion. Why? Because those dorm mattresses are hard. There are bricks. They are gross and have been used for 10+ years. Get yourself a mattress cushion. There is no ifs or ands about it. Just do it. Your back will thank you later.
2. Mattress Pad
The next must have for dorm rooms is a mattress pad. Again, dorm mattresses are not it. They are hard, uncomfortable, and gross. A mattress pad goes over the mattress and the mattress cushion I just told you to buy. This is an absolute must have. You definitely need this.

3. Twin XL Sheets
So, the next must have for any college dorm is Twin XL Sheets. You can go all out and get some fancy ones, or be like me back in the day and buy some from Amazon. I know that I said that the last two items were must haves, but this is also one. (Sorry, but I’m not kidding.)
You need sheets for your bed. There is no way out of it. Most college dorms have Twin XL mattresses, and you can most likely find the type of mattress your dorm will have on its website. Make sure you check the size of the mattress because you’ll need it for when you buy a pair of sheets from Amazon, Walmart, or wherever you plan to buy them.

4. Comforter
Find yourself a comforter that suits your personality/style. This is another thing you’ll need for your bed. Sometimes, dorms get cold, or your dorm roommate wants it below freezing. Get yourself a comforter that is also comfortable so you can sleep well.
5. Laundry Hamper
Dorm life includes carrying your clothes to the laundry room or wherever your dorm’s washing machines are. But before you do all that, you will need a place to store your dirty (most likely sweaty) clothes. A laundry hamper is another item every college freshman needs for their dorm. You can go for the basic, bare minimum collapsible ones or one that you can drag or roll around.
6. Pillows & Pillow Covers
You will want a pillow by the time you get back to your dorm after classes or just a long day. I recommend having two standard pillows and a bed rest pillow. Do not be like me and buy one pillow for my dorm. Your neck and back will hate you.
I also recommend a bed rest pillow because you’ll more than likely end up working on your bed.

7. Desk Lamp
This is another must have unless your dorm provides you with one and I guess that’ll do. Most dorms at my alma mater did not have a desk lamp. It’s also nice to have one so you aren’t bothering your roommate when studying late.
Here’s my recommended desk lamp because of its brightness levels and USB charger. I loved using it.

8. Hangers
You need something to hang your clothes on. Your dorm will most likely provide a closet and/or dressers. Hangers were one of the main things I remember seeing in Target or Walmart around Back to School/College Moving-In season.

9. Long phone charger
This must have kinda counts as a college hack. Get yourself a long phone charger. Dorm outlets tend to be placed in weird places. You maybe have an outlet that isn’t near your bed. Do yourself a favor and get a long phone charger.
10. Laundry detergent/Tide Pods
Back to laundry room stuff…there isn’t any laundry detergent or pods in the laundry room. Colleges give out random free stuff that you won’t ever need, and laundry detergent is not something they’ll hand out. I know, it’s expensive, but you have to bring your own. I recommend trying to buy in bulk whenever you can. That’s what I would do during my freshman year.
11. Mini fridge
Another must have that you absolutely need for your dorm is a mini fridge. This is where you will store your snacks and food aka food you sneak out of the dining hall. Listen to me, I don’t care what they tell you about YoU cAn’T tAkE FoOd OuT oF tHe DiNiNg HaLl. You’re paying for that food! I took food back to my dorm all the time and ate it later that night. Get your money’s worth.
If you have a roommate, then one of you can buy it. I was the one who brought the mini fridge and save money by not having to buy the next dorm must have.

12. Microwave
You need a microwave. Remember how I said to bring food back from the dining hall? You need something to heat it up with. But seriously, having a microwave is important because you will need it to warm food and snacks up. I remember how most of my snacks were microwavable, and I used my microwave a lot during the weekends when the on-campus restaurants and dining hall hours were weird or possibly closed.
Just like the fridge, if you have a roommate, one of you can buy it, and both of you share it.

13. Swiffer Floor Mop
So, dorms are going to get messy no matter what. You’re rushing to class in the morning and have 2 exams and a 10-page essay due by Friday at 11:59 PM. It’s going to be messy, and one Sunday or one day when you want to procrastinate, you decide to clean up a bit.
Get a Swiffer Floor Mop to wipe the floors. I had one for my dorm and all the college apartments. If you have carpet, get a mini vacuum. Most dorms at my university had floors, so I’m more familiar with dorms with floors. But I recommend a Swiffer Floor Mop for its convenience and how easily it can be stored. Dorm rooms are small, and you are sharing them with someone. You can’t have a million cleaning items and won’t have the time or feel like intensely cleaning. This Swiffer Mop will be enough.
14. Air Freshener
Air freshener is a dorm must have that you need. Dorms smell horrible. No matter what you do for some dorms or college apartments, they will smell horrible, especially on walking campuses where everyone sweats.
Any kind of air freshener will help a little. I still remember that my dorm smelled meh. (The fact I can remember how it smelled like four years later isn’t okay.) Just buy air freshener. My university also did not allow students to open windows, which made things worse.
Spray the air a few times a week. Buy every type of air freshener you can find and use.
15. Lysol Spray, Wipes, & Hand Sanitizer
It’s known that college freshmen are likely to get sick at least once during their first year. College dorms have so many people in there. Germs have a good time spreading around. Even outside of your dorm, you’re surrounded by people and don’t know if they’re sick or not.
Stock up on Lysol spray, Lysol wipes, and hand sanitizer. This was a recommendation for freshmen before the pandemic. But now, it’s just more common.
I had a bottle of Germ-X on one of my dorm dressers. We used Lysol wipes weekly to clean our dorm. We also sprayed Lysol from time to time. Just have these items in your dorm. They also count as cleaning supplies!

16. Robe
Another dorm must have you must have is a robe, especially if you are planning to stay in a dorm hall with communal bathrooms. My dorm room had suite bathrooms, but I still used a robe. It’s a dorm must have to just have, and it can also be used for cold days.

17. Surge Protector
Finally, another dorm must have I recommend is to have a surge protector. Again, dorm outlets are placed in the weirdest places. You’ll also have tons of electronics to plug in, so getting a surge protector will help you. I had this pair in my dorm from Amazon. It was helpful.
